I created the cloth for this piece by printing real leaves on a gel plate with Golden Fluid Acrylics as a class demo when I taught in Kentucky last year, at Making Ends Meet.

Then, as you can see I stitched it all together, and stitched some more! The final touch was the tree shape free motion stitched with 3 layers of brown tulle.

I'll be teaching nature printing, among other things at The Red Thread Retreat in Maryland in May. (There are just 2 spots left!)

  4. Just beautiful! Love the colors and stitches. Know about nature printing but tell me more about how you got a gelli plate (or gel) involved. Did you load up the leaf and leave the imprint on the gel or gelli plate, then print fabric?

    1. Yes. I do it a number of ways, Gayle. I use the leaf as a resist and as a print. thanks!

  5. Absolutely glorious, and exciting, for today at a trade show in Birmingham (UK) I was looking at gel plates that are to be imported from the USA. I wonder if it is the make you use (or do you create your own?) I can't wait, and actually press and store Autumn leaves as we won't have any fresh ones over here for quite a while. Thanks for sharing this wonderful piece.
