Online Class registration is now open and a giveaway!

“The true secret of happiness lies in taking a genuine interest in all the details of daily life and elevating them to an art.” William Morris

Registration is open for my online Sketching and Watercolor: Journal Style. The classroom will open January 10 and the first lesson is January 17.

Be inspired to record your life, a special trip, or your daily adventures in a loose, quick journal style format. Jane who is known for her friendly, encouraging teaching style, will teach drawing and watercolors using a straight-forward, intuitive approach. You’ll draw what you see, capturing the details of everyday objects and the small details of life on watercolor pages. Everyone has their own drawing style, just like handwriting, and Jane will help you to see and then record what you see on paper. The class is geared for beginners, but all levels are welcome. (Really, even if you haven’t drawn since 3rd grade, Jane can teach you!)  Jane will help you compose your journal pages, and show you a number of other creative ways to enhance your pages.

Each week you'll receive an email with a link to new lesson, with a different subject or technique. The lessons are available 24/7 and you'll receive a downloadable step-by-step pdf to work from each week. There are videos and examples from Jane's sketchbook to support the lessons.  Just like in a real classroom, you'll be able to see fellow students sketchbook pages and will be able to comment and praise their work and they'll be able to see your pages too (as long as you post them!). And you'll get honest and gentle critiques on all your work from Jane.

(You'll receive the complete list of materials (with links and descriptions) when you sign up, but basically you'll need a sketchbook watercolor paper, watercolors, a watercolor brush, and a permanent ink pen, pencil and eraser. Don't buy the stuff until you get the actual materials list)

Here's a reduced version of what the online classroom looks like. You'll post your work and others can comment and encourage you.

Recent comments from those who have taken this online class:

Nancy: I learned that if I look closely at something and pay attention and try to follow the shapes, I can actually draw things! previously the camera has always been my mark maker and now I can create in a new and different way! i never thought it would be possible.......but this class has opened up a new and vast world.
Pamela:
I have learned so much from you and your students--it has changed my life. When I draw or paint I feel like I am entering another world--my only problem is that I don't want to leave that world and come back to regular life!! It was a bold step for me post my artwork. Your support along with everyone else's has helped build my self confidence. So I am inspired to keep drawing and painting and sharing my artwork. Thanks so much for bringing us all together for this wonderful art experience.
Melissa:
I learned that doing the type of work we've been doing in this class is a really nice way to make art a regular part of my life. That I don't have to have hours upon hours to create something, but if I have an hour or so, I can quickly pull out my materials and create something in a journal.
And taking time to create art feels . . . selfish in a way, even though I know it shouldn't! But I am learning that I need to do this for myself, that it is not okay for me deny myself the opportunity to do something that gives me so much . . . joy . . . and makes me feel more like me. And the day my daughter pulled out a paper when I was painting and wanted to paint alongside me, I learned that it is good for her to see me do this too.  And, I learned that art is an activity we can share!
It is so wonderful, and so motivating to be able to post  and share and get feedback, and also so inspirational to see what others are doing!
Teddy: I HAVE LEARNED……
that if I take my time, as much as I need, and that might right now be a lot of time – it is just the right amount of time for me, and that I can after all, draw.  DRAW. I can draw.
… that I love and value and hold close to my heart the encouraging words of fellow painters.  I post an offering of mine and then rush back in a frequent and humorous way to find out who has said what, who has a suggestion (Jane, of course, most of all).

I find that for the last couple of weeks, I have been living in quite a different place in my head. Between the experience of this workshop, and the experience of choosing a few paintings at a friend’s open studio sale recently.I don’t feel the same – a little less edgy, a little more expansive, a little softer, a little fuller – or deeper - of spirit. I’m not kidding.

Laura:
This has been really enlightening, and I see a lot of things with a whole new perspective. And the journalling part of this, which I find a little difficult, is a major part of the enlightenment - now I need to think about what I see, not just see it. I think life goes by in such a big blur, and I've enjoyed slowing down a bit to do this

  2. I know we are all creative and I've learned to express my creativity in these last few years. But not in sketching. And of course it is fear of... To have the gift of your free class would probably be enough for me to step on Fear's neck and grab my supplies. I do enjoy your blog and your style. Thanks

  4. Oh Jane, I would love to win this class with you. I've been a longtime follower of your blog--arrived at it with your fiber art pieces. I had artistic aspirations when I was in 6th grade--and did pretty well back then, but would love to be able to realistically water color, without the adult critic in me commenting too much! I'll keep my fingers crossed! Thanks for everything--your blog and your giveaway!

  7. I would love to become more consistent with my art journaling. I think this class help me to 'look' at everyday objects in a new way. And that would help give me the impetus to draw more. Thanks for this chance to win a spot.

  8. Thanks Jane for a generous giveaway. I would love to win your class because it would give me the motivation to to work more in my sketchbook. I get started and then seem to drift away from sketching. From the comments, it looks like you are able to really inspire your students and starting off the new year with inspiration is just what I need. Thanks so much.

  9. I would love to take this class because I am truly a beginner. I have taken one online watercolor class and learned so much. I think if drawing is broken down into sections then I might be able to draw something recognizable. Having this class during the winter months would help me make it until spring.

  10. I truly believe that we all have ability to draw or paint. It may not be a schooled talent and may only be at scribbles on a piece of paper while on the telephone. I love to paint and have always painted something that would be pleasing to others but now I paint to please me. It may not win in prizes or awards or be sent for publications but I am always interested in improving. My art journaling may be put aside occasionally but it is always there to be picked up.

  25. I would love to take this class in order to learn how to see. What I mean by this is the fact that I was never taught in school how to really see things when I want to draw them. So I was rather frustrated that my paintings looked "weird". Therefore I chose music over art which was okay then but now I am missing something. Also I would like to a have a little something for myself (without my family of five soon to bee six).

  29. For the past couple of years I have been buying the supplies and tools to create but find myself frozen when it comes down to actually using them. I took the items that I have seen recommended for sketching and water coloring while traveling when I went to WA for a couple of weeks this summer. I think that I sketched and painted one flower the whole time. Help--I need instruction and guidance to move forward!! I would love to win your give-away!!

In fact, on the 2nd day I attempted painting my first pear and it wasn't half bad - LOL! I would love the chance to explore some more, so keeping my fingers crossed that my name pops up.

  44. Hi Jane,

I have loved making things since I was a little girl. The one thing I have always wanted to do the most, was to paint and draw. I do very little painting and drawing because I know I am not as good as I would like to be. I have admired your work for some time now and so to learn some techniques from you would be absolutely wonderful! Yes, please throw my name in for a chance to learn from you.

    Thank you so much Jane

  48. The reason I would really like to take this class right now is that I think it would be just the escape I need from a really stressful situation I am going through at work right now. I would feel I had made the commitment to do each lesson and it would make me focus on something that for those moments would be creative, relaxing and soothing. Better than "Calgon, take me away"!

  62. Hi Jane! Please consider me for your giveaway. I loved learning from you at the CREATE Retreat in NJ, and I would LOVE to continue to learn from you and really solidify the material through this online class. I love the "loose" effortless style that is anything but effortless for me! I would love to move into the new year drawing and watercoloring and journaling, and this class would really get thing off on the right foot. Thanks for the opportunity!!

  64. It has been a bit of a trod this past year. So as an antidote, I am planning on doing more watercolours this year. I would love to take the course because: first, I'd like to have the opportunity to study with you and be taught rather than just wing it, as I'm prone to do. I'd love the opportunity for some feedback. I'd love to be in a like-minded group of artists. I'd love to have the structure of a course. Finally, I need art to be a priority. It will be, actually, no matter what. So that's a bonus either way. (I sort of see myself as that woman in the field of tall flowers running in slow motion towards a paint tube and brush with some sort of slow music ... yup. That.)

  65. Lately I work just in acrylic, and I do over an over the same thing, because it's scary to do something different; I read your blog a long time now I should just jump in and just do it. A few days ago I did make a art swaps and I did want to try watercolors and I did, but they was just to heavy and without enough white (leave the paper empty); they even didn't look like watercolors. I should do this more often and practice and learn, but hey I did enjoy doing them. So something good.

  66. I've never worked with watercolor and would love to learn how. I also need to develop better drawing skills. I had hoped to make it to Red Thread to learn from you but wasn't able to so this would be a neat substitute.
