“The true secret of happiness lies in taking a genuine interest in all the details of daily life and elevating them to an art.” William Morris
Registration is open for my online Sketching and Watercolor: Journal Style. The classroom will open January 10 and the first lesson is January 17.
Sketching and Watercolor: Journal Style class description:
Be inspired to record your life, a special trip, or your daily adventures in a loose, quick journal style format. Jane who is known for her friendly, encouraging teaching style, will teach drawing and watercolors using a straight-forward, intuitive approach. You’ll draw what you see, capturing the details of everyday objects and the small details of life on watercolor pages. Everyone has their own drawing style, just like handwriting, and Jane will help you to see and then record what you see on paper. The class is geared for beginners, but all levels are welcome. (Really, even if you haven’t drawn since 3rd grade, Jane can teach you!) Jane will help you compose your journal pages, and show you a number of other creative ways to enhance your pages.
Each week you'll receive an email with a link to new lesson, with a different subject or technique. The lessons are available 24/7 and you'll receive a downloadable step-by-step pdf to work from each week. There are videos and examples from Jane's sketchbook to support the lessons. Just like in a real classroom, you'll be able to see fellow students sketchbook pages and will be able to comment and praise their work and they'll be able to see your pages too (as long as you post them!). And you'll get honest and gentle critiques on all your work from Jane.
(You'll receive the complete list of materials (with links and descriptions) when you sign up, but basically you'll need a sketchbook watercolor paper, watercolors, a watercolor brush, and a permanent ink pen, pencil and eraser. Don't buy the stuff until you get the actual materials list)
Here's a reduced version of what the online classroom looks like. You'll post your work and others can comment and encourage you.

Recent comments from those who have taken this online class:
Nancy: I learned that if I look closely at something and pay attention and try to follow the shapes, I can actually draw things! previously the camera has always been my mark maker and now I can create in a new and different way! i never thought it would be possible.......but this class has opened up a new and vast world.
Pamela:
I have
learned so much from you and your students--it has changed my life. When I draw
or paint I feel like I am entering another world--my only problem is that I
don't want to leave that world and come back to regular life!! It was a bold
step for me post my artwork. Your support along with everyone else's has helped
build my self confidence. So I am inspired to keep drawing and painting and
sharing my artwork. Thanks so much for bringing us all together for this
wonderful art experience.
Melissa:
I learned that doing the type of work we've been doing in this
class is a really nice way to make art a regular part of my life. That I don't
have to have hours upon hours to create something, but if I have an hour or so,
I can quickly pull out my materials and create something in a journal.
And taking time to create art feels . . . selfish in a way, even though I know it shouldn't! But I am learning that I need to do this for myself, that it is not okay for me deny myself the opportunity to do something that gives me so much . . . joy . . . and makes me feel more like me. And the day my daughter pulled out a paper when I was painting and wanted to paint alongside me, I learned that it is good for her to see me do this too. And, I learned that art is an activity we can share!
It is so wonderful, and so motivating to be
able to post and share and get feedback, and also so inspirational to see
what others are doing!
Teddy: I
HAVE LEARNED……
… that if I take my time, as much as I need,
and that might right now be a lot of time – it is just the right amount of time
for me, and that I can after all,
draw. DRAW. I can draw.
…
that I love and value and hold close to my heart the encouraging words of
fellow painters. I post an offering of
mine and then rush back in a frequent and humorous way to find out who has said
what, who has a suggestion (Jane, of course, most of all).
I
find that for the last couple of weeks, I have been living in quite a different
place in my head. Between the experience of this workshop, and the experience
of choosing a few paintings at a friend’s open studio sale recently.I don’t feel the same – a little
less edgy, a little more expansive, a little softer, a little fuller – or
deeper - of spirit. I’m not kidding.
Laura:
This has been really enlightening, and I see a lot of things with a whole
new perspective. And the journalling part of this, which I find a little
difficult, is a major part of the enlightenment - now I need to think about
what I see, not just see it. I think life goes by in such a big blur, and I've
enjoyed slowing down a bit to do this

It looks like a wonderful way to begin 2014... by slowing down and remembering to breathe deeply!

I know we are all creative and I've learned to express my creativity in these last few years. But not in sketching. And of course it is fear of... To have the gift of your free class would probably be enough for me to step on Fear's neck and grab my supplies. I do enjoy your blog and your style. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI have long admired your journaling style and think I could learn a lot from your class
ReplyDeleteOh Jane, I would love to win this class with you. I've been a longtime follower of your blog--arrived at it with your fiber art pieces. I had artistic aspirations when I was in 6th grade--and did pretty well back then, but would love to be able to realistically water color, without the adult critic in me commenting too much! I'll keep my fingers crossed! Thanks for everything--your blog and your giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI so admire your sketches and pages and would LOVE to win a spot in your class-I have much to learn about sketching. Thanks for offering a class spot as a giveaway!
ReplyDeleteArt journaling is something I've always meant to do, but never seem to make time for. I need the kick in the pants this workshop would give me. It looks wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI would love to become more consistent with my art journaling. I think this class help me to 'look' at everyday objects in a new way. And that would help give me the impetus to draw more. Thanks for this chance to win a spot.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jane for a generous giveaway. I would love to win your class because it would give me the motivation to to work more in my sketchbook. I get started and then seem to drift away from sketching. From the comments, it looks like you are able to really inspire your students and starting off the new year with inspiration is just what I need. Thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteI would love to take this class because I am truly a beginner. I have taken one online watercolor class and learned so much. I think if drawing is broken down into sections then I might be able to draw something recognizable. Having this class during the winter months would help me make it until spring.
ReplyDeleteI truly believe that we all have ability to draw or paint. It may not be a schooled talent and may only be at scribbles on a piece of paper while on the telephone. I love to paint and have always painted something that would be pleasing to others but now I paint to please me. It may not win in prizes or awards or be sent for publications but I am always interested in improving. My art journaling may be put aside occasionally but it is always there to be picked up.
ReplyDeleteI just love your watercolour style Jane and have wanted to learn how to keep a watercolour sketchbook journal for a long time now. If it is anything like your dvd I will enjoy every minute!
ReplyDeleteLynne
This is exactly what I need to be inspired to continue to sketch and paint. It looks like a fabulous opportunity. You are very generous! I've enjoyed following your work since I met you at Bravo a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteRobin
I found your online class with Strathmore Artist Studio very interesting and inspiring I would love to have opportunity to learn more. Thank you
ReplyDeleteHI Jane! I was having trouble commenting here so I put a note on Facebook. I shall give it another go here! I would very much like to learn sketching from the one person whose work inspires me! I want to learn how to sketch, and how to be at peace with watercolors. Please enter my name in your blog contest and accept my wishes for you to have a memorable and happy holiday season.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jane!

I would love to be able to take this class with you. I love doing crafts with my daughter and wish I was able to draw better than what I do now. I am also trying to start an art journal with watercolors so this class would be perfect for me. thank you for the opportunity to win the class.
ReplyDeleteArt journaling is fascinating. I would love to take and learn.
ReplyDeleteWell Jane, when I spoke with you at the Creative Joy Workshop, I said that I could not learn online, that I could only take live courses. But knowing how much I love your work…and seeing you build your Creative Joy Journal…I am signing up and learning how to do this. Old ideas be gone! WAHOO!!!

ReplyDeleteI would like I discipline of a class for creating a body of work that I can later use in my dye painted fabrics.
ReplyDeleteI like your posts a lot and also just took an acrylic class I enjoyed - so I know I'd enjoy this session!

ReplyDeleteI love learning online! You can watch a video or read instructions whenever you wish. I can look at a lesson over again and try it several times until I get it right.
ReplyDeleteI have always admired your blog posts and love your work. Learning from you would be a privilage Thanks Jane!
Dear Jean, I love your sketchbook pages and want to learn how to draw and paint with watercolor.
ReplyDeleteI would love to take this class in order to learn how to see. What I mean by this is the fact that I was never taught in school how to really see things when I want to draw them. So I was rather frustrated that my paintings looked "weird". Therefore I chose music over art which was okay then but now I am missing something. Also I would like to a have a little something for myself (without my family of five soon to bee six).
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great opportunity to learn from such a talented lady!
ReplyDeleteIf I could afford this class I would take it like a shot, Jane does such great classes. Would push me back into painting.
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to take this class because I'm an eternal beginner who keeps trying to figure out how to maintain and keep an art journal but who loses sight of her vision before she has even begun! I just know that your class would give me the confidence to finally, truly begin!
ReplyDeleteFor the past couple of years I have been buying the supplies and tools to create but find myself frozen when it comes down to actually using them. I took the items that I have seen recommended for sketching and water coloring while traveling when I went to WA for a couple of weeks this summer. I think that I sketched and painted one flower the whole time. Help--I need instruction and guidance to move forward!! I would love to win your give-away!!
ReplyDeleteBambi
I have always wanted to take your sketching/watercolor journal class. I took the welt felting Live class her in San Diego. I am a single Mom and a widow on limited income. Getting in touch with my lost creative side to find my way back to myself. I would love to take this class!!!! I love your saying.."Jane will teach you to draw..Yes..she really will!!"…I have always wanted to do a nature journal and found you on the internet. THAT is what I want to do!!! I will be moving to VA for 5 months to help my aging Mom..this class would be a welcome respite for me..Pick me..Pick Me..
ReplyDeleteI would love to take this class in order to improve my journaling skills. I would like to draw the things I come across which inspire me. This could be a file for my ideas for my quilting.
ReplyDeleteI have so admired your journaling style. I looks free, and effortless, while I tend to overthink and overwork my art. Learning to draw, and then to paint it would be wonderful!
ReplyDeleteYou are so inspiring! A class from you would be a really special gift!
ReplyDeleteYou are so inspiring! A class from you would really be a gift!
ReplyDeleteI love the free strathmore class you did this summer and I'd love to learn more of your techniques. I need to practice my skills and a class like this would really keep me on track and motivate me. I am choosing "create" as my word for 2014.
ReplyDeleteI have Jane's DVD from Art Journaling to Art and love her teaching style and method. Taking this course might help me to actually establish a practice of drawing through accountability and community. Thanks for offering this for some lucky person!
ReplyDeleteI so enjoy your work and love your way with watercolor. This would be a wonderful opportunity to learn more next year. Thanks for offering a free class. Susann
ReplyDeleteHello Jane -
ReplyDeleteI recently purchased your Cloth, Paper, Scissors Workshop DVD, From Art Journaling to Art, and thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, on the 2nd day I attempted painting my first pear and it wasn't half bad - LOL! I would love the chance to explore some more, so keeping my fingers crossed that my name pops up.
Thank you,
Elaine Allen
Your sketchbook drawings are alway so bright and colorful. This looks like a great way to start 2014 and learn some new techniques.
ReplyDeleteI love your style, Jane! I would love to take a class from you and be a part of your wonderful art community.
ReplyDeleteI love your style, Jane! I would love to take a class from you and be a part of your wonderful community.
ReplyDeleteI recently completed your Artful Card-Making Techniques workshop with Strathmore. I learned so much from the techniques you shared. I would very much enjoy continuing to learn from you for Sketching and Watercolor Style: Journal Style. I already keep a watercolor journal and I know there is so much more I could be doing.
ReplyDeleteI have followed your blog for awhile now and I am inspired by your quick, loose style...something I struggle with. I am very interested in learning your watercolor techniques. What a wonderful way to start the new year! Thank you for this generous chance to win a spot in your class!
ReplyDeleteHi Jane,
ReplyDeleteI have loved making things since I was a little girl. The one thing I have always wanted to do the most, was to paint and draw. I do very little painting and drawing because I know I am not as good as I would like to be. I have admired your work for some time now and so to learn some techniques from you would be absolutely wonderful! Yes, please throw my name in for a chance to learn from you.
Thank you so much Jane
Susan Howes Rix
Jane I would love to win this class to re-gift to my daughter. My class this summer was stunning and it inspired her to begin drawing again. She lives in the middle east and there aren't as many opportunities to take classes there and would love to stir the art that I see in her. Your classes are awesome!
ReplyDeleteOh my I have always admired you and have wanted to do this class....thank you for the chance
ReplyDeletelkayeheart@gmail.com
To be able to work watercolor with a light hand as you do so well, Jane. That is what I would like to learn to do. Thanks for hosting a giveaway of a spot in your class.
ReplyDeleteThe reason I would really like to take this class right now is that I think it would be just the escape I need from a really stressful situation I am going through at work right now. I would feel I had made the commitment to do each lesson and it would make me focus on something that for those moments would be creative, relaxing and soothing. Better than "Calgon, take me away"!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to be less tentative with my sketchbook work ... your class sounds quite ideal. Thanks for offering up a free space!
ReplyDeleteI would love to take this class because I can no longer attend Palomar due to my mother's failing health, so an online class is perfect. I'd also love to get the chance to learn from you, Jane!
ReplyDeleteI would love to win because I am a beginner!
ReplyDeleteA new year, a new opportunity. I would love the opportunity to take part in this course in order to meet other creatives and to brush up on my watercolor skills.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
I love the freedom of having a paintbrush in my hand. I want to be even better with it...might need to add this to my list of 2014 goals!!!
ReplyDeleteA new year, a new opportunity. I would love to win a spot in this course. It would be wonderful to brush up on my watercolor skills as well as to connect with other artists
ReplyDeleteI'd like to get nudges--ok--pushes to do more than just think about doing art. I'm very happy when I get to do art. The giveaway is very generous and I'd be so excited to win.

ReplyDeleteI was introduced to your art through the on-line card making class with Strathmore. Since that time I have anxiously waited for each new blog post to learn something new. I would love to take this Sketching and Watercolor: Journal Style class with you. Thank you for your generosity in offering this class to one of us.

ReplyDeleteJane, even though I've taken several wonderful classes with you "live", I can still use more practice and instruction. Thanks for the chance !
ReplyDeleteThis is the year 2014 that I have dedicated to growing my art skills. I have been doing ATC trades for a few years but this year I want to learn to sketch and paint I would be thrilled to win this class.
ReplyDeleteI haven't water colored since I was in my 40s....20 plus years ago. Think it's time to try it again.....grin. Where did the time go??
ReplyDeleteHi Jane! Please consider me for your giveaway. I loved learning from you at the CREATE Retreat in NJ, and I would LOVE to continue to learn from you and really solidify the material through this online class. I love the "loose" effortless style that is anything but effortless for me! I would love to move into the new year drawing and watercoloring and journaling, and this class would really get thing off on the right foot. Thanks for the opportunity!!
ReplyDeleteOh to have the chance to learn something I have wanted to do since I was 4! watercolor is something I have dreamed of doing for past 50 years, 2014 is going to be my year.
ReplyDeleteIt has been a bit of a trod this past year. So as an antidote, I am planning on doing more watercolours this year. I would love to take the course because: first, I'd like to have the opportunity to study with you and be taught rather than just wing it, as I'm prone to do. I'd love the opportunity for some feedback. I'd love to be in a like-minded group of artists. I'd love to have the structure of a course. Finally, I need art to be a priority. It will be, actually, no matter what. So that's a bonus either way. (I sort of see myself as that woman in the field of tall flowers running in slow motion towards a paint tube and brush with some sort of slow music ... yup. That.)
ReplyDeleteLately I work just in acrylic, and I do over an over the same thing, because it's scary to do something different; I read your blog a long time now I should just jump in and just do it. A few days ago I did make a art swaps and I did want to try watercolors and I did, but they was just to heavy and without enough white (leave the paper empty); they even didn't look like watercolors. I should do this more often and practice and learn, but hey I did enjoy doing them. So something good.
ReplyDeleteI've never worked with watercolor and would love to learn how. I also need to develop better drawing skills. I had hoped to make it to Red Thread to learn from you but wasn't able to so this would be a neat substitute.
