I'm having great fun sketching, stamping and stitching on these 8.5 x 11" muslin draw string bags.
I carry my camera attachments in this bag. |
You've seen this inspiration before. I'm having eternal fun with this imagery.
I used water soluble crayon for the color on this bag.

Texas Red Oak Gift Bag |
I drew, in pencil, on the bag. I outlined it with a permanent pen, then colored in with color pencils.
From the oak leaf image, I carved my own stamp. Be sure and put wax paper inside the bag, when you stamp or paint on it.
I stamped the bag, and some shipping tags. You can see the acorn stamp I made too.
And of course, I hand stitched, using a chain stitch and a back stitch.
You can see my stitch guide here.

For this bag, I stamped first, using commercial stamps. Then I printed out a fleur de lis, cut it out and traced it, using a gel roller for fabric.
And stitched!

ReplyDeleteAdorable! Not to mention a great idea :)
ReplyDeleteSo cute that I just ordered some of those bags myself - I have a holiday show coming up and I think it would be fun to feature some painted bags.

ReplyDeleteI LOVE these, Jane! I used to do a lot of embroidery and this might just get me to finding that stash of DMC. Great photos and directions... thank you!

ReplyDeleteWow Jane. Great post!
ReplyDeleteSo cute Jane! Where did you get your blank bags? Did you buy them or make them? That's making me want to carve some stamps too!
ReplyDeletethanks everyone! I'm so glad you like it. Judy, just click on the text, muslin bag, and there's a link to where I bought them.
ReplyDeleteFabulous! Gives me so many ideas for Christmas! Thanks so much for such a wonderful tutorial!
ReplyDeleteCheers!
Elegantly, simply beutiful. How do you make the crayon waterproof- is it heat set?
ReplyDeleteI am Australian and Eucalyptus flowers are some of my favorites. I love the way you have presented the Eucalyptus leaves and flowers.
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful bags, a gift in themselves!
ReplyDeleteLove these Jane! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI do heat set the water soluble crayon, but I don't expect to be washing these bags...I suppose, if I had to, I'd hand wash them, then just add more color if it had faded!
ReplyDeletethanks everyone!
These are beautiful! Although I would probably use this method for a little quiltlet instead of a gift bag. Or be really choosey who I gift to. Some family members would probably throw the bag away so they don't deserve it :-(
ReplyDeleteYOU ROCK JANE!! This tutorial is fantastic! I recently started carving my own stamps (and used one as the basis for one of my imaginary animal sketches - fun!) and now to learn about those water soluble crayons! How did I miss those in my many trips to local art supplies store. :-) So excited about all the upcoming tutes. You are all the BEST!
ReplyDeleteThe bags make great little Christmas present holders.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the inspiration, Jane! Your bags/stamps/stitching are just lovely and I can't wait to give it a try! Is that a multi-colored embroidery thread that you used on the fleur de lis? I love it!
ReplyDeleteTerrific! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYour decorated muslin bags are absolutely beautiful. Colorful, stitched---awesome!! Thanks for sharing your art with us!!
