Stitches Journal pages
It started with these pages in my journal
I wanted to create a handout for my students, so I drew it in my journal, scanned it and printed it out. Then I printed it on fabric, then, I stitched it. Then I sewed it to a muslin bag. It's my official stitching reference bag for my classes. Cute, huh?

By the way, I'm teaching at the Long Beach Quilt Festival in July and check out this generous blog post by Pokey Bolton about one of the workshops I'm teaching. And, speaking of Pokey, I'm giving away Series 900, Episodes 1-13 of Quilting Arts TV on DVD. brand new! No, I'm not in this series, but just feeling generous. (Actually, I ordered a second copy by mistake, so why not give it away!) Leave a comment and tell me if you enjoy hand stitching and what is it that you stitch. I'll select a random winner on June 19th!
leave a comment and maybe win this DVD set

  5. Hi Jane-
I'm a quilter and beginning watercolorist. I really enjoyed your online class: On Location. Your bag is really creative. What a great reference to handstitching. I mostly do handstitching with wool, but I also like other fabrics. Handstitching is great therapy! Thanks for your give away and all your inspiration!

  7. Hi Jane, I find hand stitching relaxing and immediate. I'm trying a crazy quilt by hand and the stitch samples are a perfect idea to help me along.

  8. I love hand stitching. I like the rhythm of the in and out of stitching. When I was little my mom taught me to embroider and I did pillow cases etc. Then I did shadow work as a course to get out of the house for an evening when I had young children. I learned to smock when I had a baby girl. I still hand quilt some for special things and I am making a dear jane by hand and a grandmother flower garden. But I have not embroidered for awhile. But now that I am doing more art quilting I can use my embroidery skills.
    Yeah!
    I love your sampler bag!
To many projects... to little time.
Oh and I would like the quilting arts series too!

Thanks for all your wonderful creative inspiration!

  12. You are just so smart! Love the idea and the work! I do love stitching, especially french knots! Currently, I am working on a quilted wall hanging and am almost finished with the hand quilting part. And I can't wait to finish so I can move on to the hundreds of french knots I have planned for my new silk thread, which I have never worked with before! :)

  14. Hand stitching to me is what makes me feel like my work is both a work of art and passion. The process of hand stitching is relaxing and I feel like I am drawing and creating as I stitch. Right now I a hand stitching and embellishing with beads, charms, fibers and using color and symbolism on wet felted egg containers I make. I create the egg shape and once it is dry, I remove the mold ( an egg ) , cut it open and ponder for a bit. Then I start the work...all hand stitched. I call my containers Feltagge Fleggs and am embarking on afertility series soon. The name came from my significant other based on felted eggs with legs that kind of look like Faberege Eggs...only with softer materials! I LOVE creating these eggs as I normally work in pastels and watercolor.

  16. I love to add a small amount of hand stitching to my projects just to make them "reflect me". This reminds me that I come from many generations of sewers/quilters who did all of their work by hand.

  17. What a fun way to have interaction with your followers to offer a free give away.Such fun to read the comments of other stitchers...I've been stitching since I was a child, but in a slow fashion. Thus, my alias, slwqltr. I love quilting, stitching, anything with my hands and have started journaling. Your blog is giving me constant inspiration and making me grow as an artist! It takes me forever and a day to finish a project, but when it's finished, it's the best feeling in the world, success! 22. I love hand stitching and Quilting Arts so this would be something I would enjoy. I find it very peaceful to hand stitch. My grandmother taught me some of the basics when I was old enough to handle a needle and then introduced more stitches as I got older. We both enjoyed stitching together and did so on a regular basis until she passed at age 91. I continue stitching and it always reminds me of the great times with her. Thanks for the opportunity.

Just wondering! Maybe I will bring it to Shelbyville KY and let you take a look ajdeardurff@netscape.net

  41. Jane, what a great idea for your bag! My goal this summer is to finish a quilt for my daughter-in-law that her grandmother started for her before she passed away. It is all hand turned applique, so a friend is going to work with me to learn how during the "summer olympics nites" at our local quilt shop. I'm looking forward to the challenge!

  42. Hi Jane, I have been following you through Quilting Arts mag etc, so I was thrilled to find your blog and join. I love hand stitching because there is a direct connection between the hand and what you create giving you a more immediate sense of satisfaction, and also some kind of physical (mainly tactile I suppose) pleasure. I'd love to receive the QA giveaway too, if I had a bit of luck!

  69. Your stitching ideas are so refreshing and bring back memories of my late mother teaching me how to embroider when I was about 10. I remember having a Ginny doll and my mother hand embroidered the most beautiful doll clothes for me.

When I work today as a fiber artist I try to incorporate as much hand stitching as possible because embroidery is like meditation and I can also pay tribute to my mother.

  72. I have always preferred hand stitching over machine. I feel more comfortable with a needle in my hand. I think it is like you and your relationship with a pencil. I can draw with my needle freely and with a pencil, well it may snap in two because I am so tense!;) Thanks for the opportunity. QA isn't shown here, so I usually ask for the dvds for Christmas. Thanks Jane!
