I showed you the buildings of Havana here. These photos are some of the interiors, as seen from the street.
This is the newly restored Palace of Matrimony. Yes, it's just for weddings. |
Cuba is just now allowing small employee owned businesses. This is an example of a woman opening up a produce stand in her home. |
Yes, there are lots of old American cars in Havana! They are mostly taxi cabs, so anyone can ride in them.
Including the hearse at the cemetery!
Tomorrow, Ernest Hemingway house and food and mostly drink in Cuba.
Don't miss yesterday's post on dance and drinks in Cuba.
You're having a blast, aren't you? Yeah, we can tell! :D The photos are spectacular, particularly the cars. I heard on Anthony Bourdain's show a couple of years ago that the reason there are so many classic cars in Cuba is because they rarely get anything new, so must make their "riches" from the 50's (before the massive embargoes were instituted) last and last and last.
ReplyDeleteMerci pour l'ensemble de vos photos...
ReplyDeleteUne très jolie publication.
Gros bisous
Loving these photos! Great shots! Thank you so much for letting us see this culture that most of us will never have the opportunity to see in person.
ReplyDeleteThose interiors just make me want to get in there and fix them up. Oh, the possibilities--not that I, personally, could do it, but if there were just enough money in the world imagine what could be done.
ReplyDeleteFascinating photos of a fascinating trip!

oh my gosh, I *love* these photos. They are so incredibly evocative.
ReplyDeleteLove those cars. How do you suppose they get parts - probably make their own!
ReplyDeleteSuch fabulous photos. Thanks so much for sharing them. I love the beautiful architectural elements.
ReplyDeleteJane, the buildings in your pics are all very "distressed." Did you choose to photograph them because of their patina, or are there no new buildings?
ReplyDeleteI vacationed in Cuba a few years ago and took lots of pictures of the old cars - for someone who grew up in the 50s (in Canada) it was a trip down memory lane. I am loving your series.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I thought the exteriors were amazing, but the interiors and the cars take the cake. Love all of your pictures and they will make terrific subjects for your drawings. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYour interior photos capture the economic sadness of Cuba - how things have deteriorated over the years. The cars look grand, don't they? The Cuban people are so proud, hence their amazing upkeep of those vintage vehicles.

They have a lot of other cars too, all from Russia and South Korea and China. It's just that these American beauties get the press. They make parts to repair, and also used parts from the cars from other countries.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos, Jane! Looks like so much fun!
