Yes, there are lots of old American cars in Havana! They are mostly taxi cabs, so anyone can ride in them.
Including the hearse at the cemetery!

You're having a blast, aren't you? Yeah, we can tell! :D The photos are spectacular, particularly the cars. I heard on Anthony Bourdain's show a couple of years ago that the reason there are so many classic cars in Cuba is because they rarely get anything new, so must make their "riches" from the 50's (before the massive embargoes were instituted) last and last and last.

ReplyDeleteI vacationed in Cuba a few years ago and took lots of pictures of the old cars - for someone who grew up in the 50s (in Canada) it was a trip down memory lane. I am loving your series.

ReplyDeleteYour interior photos capture the economic sadness of Cuba - how things have deteriorated over the years. The cars look grand, don't they? The Cuban people are so proud, hence their amazing upkeep of those vintage vehicles.

They have a lot of other cars too, all from Russia and South Korea and China. It's just that these American beauties get the press. They make parts to repair, and also used parts from the cars from other countries.
