Art Quilt: what is it?

 (Pictured: Rainbow Series: Apricot Tangerine)
I'm a member and regional co-rep for Studio Art Quilts Associates, an international group of 2500 artists. Here's what they say about the meaning of art quilt:
"SAQA defines an art quilt as a contemporary artwork exploring and expressing aesthetic concerns common to the whole range of visual arts: painting, printmaking, photography, graphic desing, assemblage, and sculpture, which retains, through materials or techniques, a clear relationship to the folk art quilt from which it descends."
Interesting, huh? No mention of 3 layers, or stitching or materials/process at all. hmmm.

  1. ya know, i have long wondered what made an art quilt an art quilt... i THINK i've made a few recently but i'm still unsure... btw, i think your work is so freeing. thanks for sharing it.

  2. Interesting indeed. I thought the stitching was the main event in a quilt. Maybe because that's the default assumption they didn't feel the need to mention it?

  3. thank you so very much for sharing this definition with us!!! SO many have asked me to define the term and I stumble and bumble around and feel very dissatisfied with my answer!!!! Now I know what to say!!!! Hugs!

Thanks so much for visiting!
